SKRIPSI TRANSLATION ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS AND A PROFESSIONAL TRANSLATOR IN TRANSLATING COMPOUND SENTENCES IN A SHORT STORY ENTITLED “AN OCCURRENCE AT OWL CREEK BRIDGE"

Translation plays an important role in transferring meaning from a source language to a target language so that the message can be understood accurately and naturally. However, students often face difficulties when translating more complex sentence structures, especially compound sentences, which can affect the quality of their translation. This research aims to analyze students’ translation quality and compare it with that of a professional translator in translating compound sentences from the short story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”. The analysis focuses on two aspects of translation quality, namely accuracy and acceptability. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data consist of 68 compound sentences taken from the short story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”, which were translated by four student groups and a professional translator. The translations were then evaluated by two raters using the translation quality assessment model proposed by Nababan et al. (2012). The findings show that the professional translator produces more consistent and higher-quality translations compared to the students. The professional translation reaches 54% in both accuracy and acceptability, while the student groups show higher percentages of less accurate and less acceptable translations. In conclusion, the professional translator shows stronger ability in maintaining meaning and producing natural expressions in the target language.
