SKRIPSI EXPLORING THE DIFFICULTIES OF EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS IN WRITING RECOUNT TEXTS AT SMP NEGERI 7 MAGELANG

Writing is the activity of expressing ideas, thoughts, experiences, and information in written form. As one of the most complex language skills, writing requires students to master various linguistic components simultaneously. However, many junior high school students still experience difficulties in writing recount texts. This study aimed to analyze the difficulties faced by eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 7 Magelang in writing recount texts, identify the factors influencing these difficulties, and describe the strategies used by students and teachers to overcome them. This study employed a qualitative descriptive design involving 32 eighth-grade students and one English teacher. Data were collected through writing documents, questionnaires, student interviews, and teacher interviews. The findings revealed that students experienced difficulties in all five writing aspects: content, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. Grammar and vocabulary were identified as the most dominant difficulties. These difficulties were influenced by limited vocabulary, inadequate grammar mastery, difficulties in sentence construction, and insufficient understanding of spelling and punctuation. To overcome these difficulties, students used dictionaries, Google Translate, the internet, and assistance from teachers and peers, while the teacher provided vocabulary and grammar exercises, model texts, contextual learning, and encouraged the use of dictionaries and translation applications. In conclusion, eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 7 Magelang still experienced various difficulties in writing recount texts, particularly in grammar and vocabulary. Therefore, teachers are encouraged to provide more intensive and contextual instruction in vocabulary and grammar. Future researchers are expected to involve broader participants or different educational levels to obtain more comprehensive findings.
