SKRIPSI THE EFFECTIVENESS OF TOPICAL REVIEW STRATEGY TO TEACH SPEAKING FOR THE ELEVENTH GRADERS‘ AT SMA N 2 MAGELANG

In language learning, speaking skills are vital for minimizing misunderstandings. However, students in speaking classes often face obstacles, particularly a lack of interaction and incorrect pronunciation. The Topical Review Strategy serves as an interactive instructional technique that can help overcome these challenges and enhance their speaking competence. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the Topical Review Strategy for teaching speaking to eleventh graders at SMA N 2 Magelang and to assess whether students who learn through this strategy show a significant difference in speaking skills compared to those who learn through Mind Mapping. The study adopted a quasi-experimental quantitative approach, involving 64 eleventh-grade students from two classes at SMA N 2 Magelang. The experimental group (Class XI MIPA 1, 32 students) was taught using the Topical Review Strategy, while the control group (Class XI IPS 1, 32 students) was taught using Mind Mapping. Data were gathered through pre-tests and post-tests and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. After verifying that the data were homogeneous and normally distributed, hypothesis testing was carried out using a t-test. After the Topical Review Strategy was applied, the witer found a notable difference in students' speaking performance. The test results demonstrated that the ttest value surpassed the t-table value (7.296 > 1.667), confirming a significant difference and demonstrating its effectiveness in improving speaking skills between the experimental and control groups. Additionally, the N-Gain analysis indicated an average improvement of 40% among students who received instruction through the Topical Review Strategy, categorized as moderately effective. Based on these results, the researcher concluded that the Topical Review Strategy is an effective approach for teaching speaking to eleventh graders.
