SKRIPSI A DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS OF HOTS USED IN READING COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS ON RECOUNT TEXT FOR EIGHTH GRADERS AT SMP NEGERI 1 NGAWEN
Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) encourages critical, analytical, and creative thinking. Hence, the Merdeka Curriculum prioritizes its adoption. Based on previous studies, Indonesian English textbook exams still stress lower-order thinking skills over higher-order cognitive processes. Thus, to analyze the curricular congruence of textbook assessment items, cognitive demands must be examined. This study aimed to analyze the implementation of HOTS in the reading comprehension questions in the recount-text chapter of the textbook BRIGHT: An English Course 2 for SMP/MTs Grade VIII (Kurikulum Merdeka), used by eighthgrade students at SMP Negeri 1 Ngawen in the 2025/2026 academic year. Specifically, the study sought to determine whether HOTS were incorporated in the reading assessment questions and to identify the most dominant HOTS category based on Anderson and Krathwohl's Revised Bloom's Taxonomy. This study employed a descriptive qualitative content analysis design. The research object consisted of 78 reading comprehension questions found in the recount-text chapter of the textbook. The questions, presented in various formats such as multiple-choice, matching, short-answer, short essay, and descriptive questions, were analyzed using Anderson and Krathwohl's Revised Bloom's Taxonomy, focusing on the Higher-Order Thinking Skills categories of Analyzing (C4), Evaluating (C5), and Creating (C6). The findings revealed that the textbook successfully integrates HOTS into its reading comprehension activities. A total of 40 questions were identified as HOTS, indicating that higher-order cognitive processes are systematically incorporated throughout the recount-text chapter. Among the HOTS categories, Analyzing (C4) was the most dominant, representing 75% (30 items), followed by Evaluating (C5) with 17.5% (7 items) and Creating (C6) with 7.5% (3 items). These findings demonstrate that the textbook aligns with the objectives of the Merdeka Curriculum by promoting higher-order thinking skills, while placing greater emphasis on developing students' analytical abilities as the foundation for more advanced cognitive processes.
