SKRIPSI USING THE STORY CUBES LEARNING MEDIA TO INCREASE THE EIGHTH GRADERS’ LEARNING MOTIVATION AND NARRATIVE TEXT WRITING SKILL

Writing is one of the essential language skills to master, because it enables the students to organize, express, and develop the ideas by implementing the appropriate grammar, vocabulary, and organization. However, many students still struggle to construct a good quality of text, especially in narrative text. This happens because they encountered difficulties in developing ideas and organizing content during writing due to lack of ideas. Moreover, the low motivation during the learning process also contributes to low learning outcomes. Therefore, this study aims to improve the students’ motivation during the teaching and learning process as well as the students’ narrative text writing skill by implementing the Story Cubes as a learning media. This study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) using the model proposed by Kemmis and McTaggart, involving Pre-Cycle, Cycle I, and Cycle II. Each cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subjects of this study were 32 students of class VIII B at SMP Negeri 7 Magelang. The qualitative data were obtained from observation, self-report questionnaire, and documentation, while the quantitative data were obtained from writing test. The findings of the study demonstrated a significant improvement in both students' learning motivation and narrative writing after the implementation of Story Cubes. The students’ motivation improved from 58,4% in Pre-Cycle, to 68,4% in Cycle I, and 79,3% in Cycle II. Moreover, the students’ writing score also increased from 75.51 in Pre-Cycle, to 82.18 in Cycle I, and reached 88.21 in Cycle II. These findings indicated that students became more active, confident, and motivated in the writing activities after the implementation of the Story Cubes. In addition, the students showed a deeper understanding as they became more capable of organizing narrative texts coherently, developing ideas more logically, using appropriate grammar and tenses, and employing the language features of narrative texts correctly. As a result, they were able to produce a better quality of narrative text.
