SKRIPSI IMPROVING READING COMPREHENSION OF RECOUNT TEXT THROUGH SNOWBALL THROWING TECHNIQUE USING PADLET FOR EIGHTH GRADERS AT SMPN 1 GABUS PATI
Reading comprehension is one of the essential skills in English learning because it enables students to understand, interpret, and evaluate written information. However, the preliminary observation conducted in class VIII F of SMPN 1 Gabus Pati revealed several problems. The students showed low motivation, limited participation during classroom activities, difficulty in comprehending recount texts, inadequate vocabulary, and low concentration during reading lessons. In addition, the teaching process was still dominated by conventional teacher-centered methods, resulting in less interactive learning. Therefore, this study investigated the implementation of the Snowball Throwing technique using Padlet to improve students’ reading comprehension and learning motivation in recount texts. The objectives of this study were to determine whether the implementation of the Snowball Throwing technique using Padlet could improve students’ reading comprehension and learning motivation in recount texts for the eighth-grade students of SMPN 1 Gabus Pati. This study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in a pre-cycle and two action cycles involving planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The participants were 32 students of class VIII F at SMPN 1 Gabus Pati. The data were collected through reading comprehension tests, observation sheets, questionnaires, and documentation. Quantitative data were analyzed by comparing the students’ reading comprehension scores across each cycle, while qualitative data were analyzed descriptively to examine the improvement in students’ learning motivation. The findings showed that students' reading comprehension improved significantly, with the mean score increasing from 65.50 in the pre-cycle to 74.47 in Cycle I and 83.66 in Cycle II. Students' learning motivation also increased, as indicated by higher participation, confidence, cooperation, and enthusiasm during the learning process. The integration of the Snowball Throwing technique and Padlet created a more interactive and student-centered learning environment. In conclusion, the implementation of the Snowball Throwing technique using Padlet successfully improved students’ reading comprehension and learning motivation in recount texts for eighth graders at SMPN 1 Gabus Pati. The combination of cooperative learning activities and digital media created a more interactive, enjoyable, and student-centered learning atmosphere.
