SKRIPSI THE USE OF PAPERRATER WEBSITE TO INCREASE THE EIGHTH GRADERS’ RECOUNT TEXT WRITING SKILL AT SMP NEGERI 1 MERTOYUDAN

English is one of the compulsory subjects taught in Indonesian schools. In learning English, students are required to master four language skill: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Among these skill, writing is considered one of the most difficult because students must organize ideas, apply grammar correctly, use appropriate vocabulary, and follow the structure of a text simultaneously. One of the text types taught in junior high school is recount text. However, many students still experience difficulties in writing recount texts, particularly in grammar, vocabulary, organization, and idea development. These problems were also found among the eighth graders of SMP Negeri 1 Mertoyudan. This study aimed to improve students’ ability to write recount texts and their learning motivation through the use of the PaperRater website as an AI-based learning medium. The writer employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) involving 32 students of class VIII at SMP Negeri 1 Mertoyudan. The instruments used in this research were writing tests, observation sheets, questionnaires, and documentation. The research was conducted in three stages: Pre-Cycle, Cycle I, and Cycle II. The results of the study showed a significant improvement in students’ recount text writing skill. The mean score increased from 69.94 in the Pre-Cycle to 72.88 in Cycle I and reached 82.22 in Cycle II. In addition, 27 students (84%) successfully achieved the Minimum Completeness Criteria (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal/KKM) in Cycle II. Another finding revealed that the use of the PaperRater website improved students’ learning motivation and classroom participation. The observation result showed that students’ participation reached 83% in Cycle II, while the questionnaire result indicated a positive response of 96.4% toward the use of the PaperRater website in learning writing. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the use of the PaperRater website effectively improved the eighth graders’ recount text writing skill and learning motivation at SMP Negeri 1 Mertoyudan. The implementation of AI-based learning media also helped students revise their writing independently through immediate feedback and supported teachers in providing writing feedback more efficiently.
