SKRIPSI AN ANALYSIS OF DIRECTIVE SPEECH ACTS IN THE GREEN STREET HOOLIGANS MOVIE BY LEXI ALEXANDER AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR TEACHING SPEAKING SKILL
Speech act theory is an essential component of pragmatics because it examines how
speakers use language to influence others in various contexts. Among the categories
of speech acts, directive speech acts are particularly significant because they are
used to direct, request, advise, suggest, or encourage others to perform certain
actions. Understanding directive speech acts provides valuable insights into social
interaction, power relations, and communicative intentions.
This study aims to analyze the types of directive speech acts used in the movie
Green Street Hooligans by Lexi Alexander, identify the dominant type, and explain
the pedagogical implications of the findings for teaching speaking skills in English
Language Teaching (ELT).
This study employed a qualitative approach using content analysis. The
primary data source was the original script of Green Street Hooligans (2005). The
data consisted of utterances containing directive speech acts, which were classified
and analyzed according to their types and functions.
The results revealed that all five types of directive speech acts were present in
the movie. These findings indicate that the characters utilize various linguistic
strategies to influence the actions of others in different communicative contexts.
Commands emerged as the dominant type, accounting for 58.4% of the total data,
followed by requests and advice (12.4% each), suggestions (9.3%), and instructions
(7.5%). The dominance of commands reflects the direct and action-oriented
communication style portrayed in the movie. Further, the findings suggest that the
movie has the potential to serve as an authentic learning resource for teaching
speaking skills by providing contextual examples of directive speech acts that may
help learners develop pragmatic competence and communicative awareness.
Overall, the current study suggests that Green Street Hooligans provides
authentic examples of directive speech acts and can serve as a valuable pedagogical
resource for developing students’ speaking skills and communicative competence
in ELT classrooms.
