SKRIPSI USING CHARADES APPLICATION TO IMPROVE THE FIFTH GRADERS VOCABULARY MASTERY OF SD N MAGERSARI 2 IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2025/2026
Vocabulary mastery is one of the fundamental components of English language learning because it serves as the foundation for developing students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. However, preliminary observations conducted in Grade V of SD N Magersari 2 revealed that many students experienced difficulties in understanding the meaning of English words, pronouncing vocabulary accurately, and using vocabulary appropriately during classroom activities. Moreover, the English learning process remained teacher-centered with limited use of interactive learning media, resulting in low vocabulary achievement and insufficient student learning engagement. Therefore, this study aimed to improve students’ vocabulary mastery and learning engagement through the implementation of the Charades Application in English vocabulary instruction. This study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) using Kemmis and McTaggart’s (2014) spiral model, consisting of a pre-cycle followed by two action cycles. Each cycle included four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The participants were 28 fifth-grade students of SD N Magersari 2 in the 2025/2026 academic year. The research data were collected through vocabulary tests, observation checklists, interviews, and documentation. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics by comparing students’ vocabulary achievement across the pre-cycle, Cycle I, and Cycle II, while qualitative data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing to examine changes in students’ learning engagement. The findings revealed that implementing the Charades Application effectively improved both students’ vocabulary mastery and learning engagement. The students’ mean vocabulary score increased from 71.07 in the pre-cycle to 87.68 in Cycle I and 93.39 in Cycle II, indicating an overall improvement of 22.32 points and exceeding the school’s Minimum Mastery Criterion (75). In addition, students’ learning engagement gradually improved throughout the research, increasing from 64.29% (Medium) in the pre-cycle to 67.86% (Medium) in Cycle I and reaching 82.14% (Very High) in Cycle II. The improvement was reflected in students’ active participation, greater enthusiasm, effective collaboration, increased confidence, and willingness to communicate using English vocabulary during classroom activities. The Charades Application is an effective interactive learning medium for improving vocabulary mastery and learning engagement among fifth-grade students. Integrating game-based learning with Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) created a more engaging, meaningful, and student-centered learning environment. Therefore, the Charades Application is recommended as an alternative medium for teaching English vocabulary to elementary school students.
