SKRIPSI THE EFFECT OF REALIA AND ENVIRONMENTAL OBJECTS IN IMPROVING THE FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS' VOCABULARY MASTERY
Vocabulary mastery is fundamental for young learners learning English as a foreign language. However, fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Kalinegoro 6 frequently encounter substantial hurdles in retaining new words due to a heavy reliance on abstract workbook memorization and traditional teacher-centered instruction. Although realia has been widely used in EFL classrooms, little is known about its effectiveness for Indonesian elementary school learners when integrated with environmental objects. This study aims to investigate whether integrating realia and environmental objects significantly improves students’ vocabulary mastery and to explore the teacher’s and students’ perceptions of its implementation in the classroom. An explanatory sequential mixed-methods design was utilized in this study. The quantitative phase employed a pre-experimental One-Group Pretest-Posttest design with a total sample of 19 fifth-grade students. Data were collected via valid and reliable multiple-choice and short-answer vocabulary tests, which were then analyzed using a Paired Samples T-Test and Normalized Gain (N-Gain) score in SPSS. In the successive qualitative phase, semi-structured interviews and reflexive field notes were analyzed using the interactive model (data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing) to provide deep contextual insights. The quantitative findings demonstrated a significant improvement in language proficiency: the classroom mean score increased from 75.68 on the pretest to 87.58 on the post-test. The Paired Samples T-Test yielded a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), successfully rejecting the null hypothesis. Furthermore, the N-Gain analysis generated a score of 48.93%, placing the treatment securely within the "Medium" effectiveness category. Triangulated qualitative data substantiated these upgrades, revealing that direct sensory interaction with physical and environmental media effectively maximized young learners' curiosity, minimized classroom boredom, and reduced foreign-language learning anxiety. Minor challenges regarding spelling orthography were successfully mitigated using interactive spelling games. In conclusion, using realia and environmental objects is a highly effective, realistic, and cost-effective pedagogical approach to accelerate vocabulary retention among concrete operational young learners.
