SKRIPSI USING SILENT MOVIE ‘SHAUN THE SHEEP’ TO IMPROVE NARRATIVE WRITING SKILL OF THE EIGHTH GRADERS AT SMP NEGERI 1 DUKUN
In English language learning, students were introduced to various text types
prescribed in the curriculum, one of which was the narrative text. Writing narrative
texts intended to help students develop their ability to express ideas and apply
appropriate language features. However, writing remained one of the most
challenging language skills because it required students to generate ideas, organize
them coherently, and use appropriate vocabulary and grammatical structures
simultaneously.
The problem that was identified among the students of Class VIII B at SMP
Negeri 1 Dukun based on the observation and discussions with the English teacher,
the students' ability to write narrative texts still needed improvement. Most students
experienced difficulties in generating ideas, organizing the storyline coherently, and
applying appropriate vocabulary and grammar. As a result, many of their written
works did not fully meet the generic structure and language features expected in
narrative texts. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whether there
was an improvement in students’ writing skills and learning motivation before and
after being taught narrative text using silent movie media.
This study was conducted using the Classroom Action Research method
with two cycles. The instruments employed were writing test assessments,
observations, and questionnaires. The research was carried out in class VIII B of
SMP Negeri 1 Dukun in the 2025/2026 academic year, with a total of 32 students.
The findings revealed that the use of silent movies as learning media
significantly improved students’ narrative writing skills. This was evident from the
writing test results in the pre-cycle, which showed an average score of 50.3, whereas
the results in Cycle 2 reached 78. Students’ learning motivation also increased, as
observed by the English teacher. The observation results in Cycle 1 only reached
44%, while in Cycle 2 they rose to 78%. The questionnaire results demonstrated a
similar trend, showing an increase in students’ motivation from 39.38% in Cycle 1
to 91.56% in Cycle 2.
This study concluded that the teacher’s role during the teaching process, a
supportive learning environment, and the use of appropriate learning media such as
the silent movie Shaun the Sheep were able to enhance students’ ability to write
narrative texts as well as their learning motivation. Thus, the implementation of
Shaun the Sheep silent movie successfully improved students’ writing skills and
motivation.
