SKRIPSI GUIDED READING AND SUMMARIZING PROCEDURE TO IMPROVE EIGHTH GRADERS’ NARRATIVE TEXT READING SKILL OF SMP NEGERI 2 CANDIMULYO
Reading is one of the English skills that students need to master in learning
the language. However, many students are still less motivate during the teaching
and learning process, which affects their reading skill. Therefore, teachers need to
apply an engaging teaching strategy to encourage students to participate actively
in the classroom. One strategy that can be used is the Guided Reading and
Summarizing Procedure. In this study, GRASP was applied to improve students'
motivation during teaching and learning process as well as the students’ reading
skill in narrative texts at the junior high school level.
This study was conducted to achieve two objectives. First, it aimed to
identify the students' motivation in reading skill of narrative text among 8th-grade
students at SMP N 2 Candimulyo. Second, was to examine the extent to which the
Fix-Up strategy improves the report text reading skill of 8th-grade students at SMP
N 2 Candimulyo.
This study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) using Kemmis and
McTaggart as its research design and was carried out in two cycles. Each cycle
included four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The
participants of this study were 32 students from class VIII F of SMP N 2
Candimulyo.
The qualitative data were analyzed using the qualitative analysis technique
proposed by Miles et al., while the quantitative data were analyzed by calculating
the average scores of the reading tests. The students’ motivation improved from
50.44% in Pre-Cycle, to 64.28% in Cycle I, and 79.01% in Cycle II. Furthermore,
the students' average reading test score increased from 58.67 in the Pre-Cycle,
which was categorized as "poor," to 77.89 in Cycle II, which was categorized as
"good," indicating that the performance indicator had been achieved.
In conclusion, the findings showed that the Guided Reading and
Summarizing Procedure was effective in increasing students' motivation in
reading narrative texts. It also improved their reading skill. GRASP assisted
students in dealing with reading difficulties, particularly in understanding
unfamiliar vocabulary and comprehending the text more effectively. Therefore,
GRASP can be considered an alternative teaching strategy for English teachers to
encourage students' participation and enhance their reading skill in the classroom
