SKRIPSI IMPLEMENTING VARK-BASED LEARNING ACTIVITIES TO IMPROVE THE STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY OF THIRD GRADERS
This research was conducted to improve students’ vocabulary mastery through
the implementation of the VARK-based learning activities. This study focuses on
addressing the students’ difficulties in memorizing vocabulary and its meanings,
spelling and writing vocabulary, as well as increasing their interest and participation
in the learning process. Moreover, the absence of an English teacher makes the
classroom teacher tend to apply a monotonous learning style.
Based on the background, research questions, and objectives, the writer
implemented the VARK-based learning activities to address these issues. This study
used Classroom Action Research (CAR), conducted in two cycles: Cycle I and
Cycle II. Each cycle consisted of four stages: planning, action, observation, and
reflection. The research subjects were third-grade students at SD Negeri Kramat 5
Magelang. The instruments used to collect data included tests, observation sheets,
questionnaires, and documentation.
The results of the research indicate that the implementation of the VARK-based
learning activities successfully improved students’ vocabulary mastery. The
average score increased from 67.27 in the pre-cycle to 73.64 in Cycle I, and finally
reached 85 in Cycle II. Additionally, student participation improved from the
“Low” category in the pre-cycle to the “High” category in Cycle I, and further
increased to the “Very High” category in Cycle II. The results of the observation
sheet and questionnaire also indicated that students showed more positive
responses, higher interest, and better understanding of the material, especially about
vocabulary.
In conclusion, the implementation of the VARK-based learning activities can
improve students’ vocabulary mastery, participation, and active engagement in
learning English. Therefore, VARK is highly recommended as a learning style that
can be implemented to improve students’ vocabulary mastery, encourage students
to actively participate, support their learning needs, and create a more engaging and
student-centered learning environment.
