The purpose of this research is to prove thatthe use of Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) in Teaching Reading Comprehension is more effective than the use oflecturing method. Based on the statement above, the resecher assumes two hyphoteses as follows:

1. There is a significant difference in teaching reading comprehension between the students who are taught using Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) method and the students who are taught using speech method.
2. The students whose teacher uses Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) have better reading comprehension than those whose teacher uses speechmethod in teaching reading comprehension.


The writer took the second grade students of SMP 3 Grabag as the population that consist of 5 classes. To get cluster, the researcher used simple random sampling and divided the classes into two classes. Class A as the experimental group was taught using Student Teams Achievement Divisions(STAD) method and the class B taught by speech method is as a control class.

The writerused test and documentation to collect the data, and the writer analyzed the data using the comparative analysis to find whether the different scores of the class are significant or not. The mean of experimental is 68,74 whereas the mean of the control group is 55.47.

Based on the result of statistical calculation, the writer concluded that there is a significant difference between the class who are taught using Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD)and those who are taught using speech method. Student’s reading skills who are taught using STAD are better than those who are taught using speech method. The writer then suggest English teachers to use” Student Teams Achievement Divisions(STAD) method” as one of the method in teaching reading comprehension.
