USING FORMAT MATTERS TEHNIQUE TO IMPROVE THE READING SKILL OF NARRATIVE TEXT TO THE THIRD GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA MUHAMMADIYAH BOROBUDUR IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2014/2015

Reading is one of four language skill that is very important to be mastered by students. In senior high school, English tests and final examination mostly require reading skill in each item. Therefore, reading is also emphasized in teaching-learning process. However, the reading skill of the third graders of SMA Muhammadiyah Borobudur was still low. It can be seen from the average of
students reading test that was only 40 and it does not reach the minimum requirement standard that is 60. The objectives of this research are to know whether Format Matters Technique can improve students’ activeness in teaching-learning process and to know whether Format Matters technique can improve reading skill of the third graders of SMA Muhammadiyah Borobudur in the school year 2014/2015. The subject of this research is the third graders of SMA Muhammadiyah Borobudur in the school year 2014/2015. The writer conducted a classroom action research through a Pre-cycle and two Cycles. In Pre-Cycle, the writer observed the teaching-learning process and gave a Pre-Cycle test. After that, she gave treatment to students in Cycle I until Cycle II using Format Matters Technique and collected the data using observation sheet, questionnaire, and test. From the writer’s observation and questionnaire are shows that there is also some student’s behaviors change after the writer taught the reading class using Format Matters technique. In Cycle I it can be concluded that there was a bit of change that the students were ready to join the reading class taught using Format Matter Technique, but. However students didn’t show their enthusiasm during the teaching learning process. While in Cycle II they had better attention and were more active in the class and they seemed interested in Format Matter Technique which had better steps of study and was easy to understand. In Pre Cycle test, the mean of the class scores is 48.92. In Cycle I the class mean of the test scores is 55.35, the improvement from Pre Cycle test is 6.43 points. In Cycle II the class mean of the scores is 60.71, the improvement from Cycle I test is 5.36 points. Based on the above description, the writer concludes that there is an improvement of students’ activeness in teaching-learning process and students’ reading skill after they are taught using Format Matters technique. Thus, it is an appropriate technique reading for senior high school students.
