USING ENVIRONMENT AS TEACHING MEDIA TO IMPROVE DESCRIPTIVE TEXT WRITING SKILL OF THE SEVENTH GRADERS OF SMP N 9 MAGELANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2014/2015

ABSTRACT:
Triyanita (2015). Using Environment as Teaching Media to Improve Descriptive Text in Writing Skill of the seventh graders of SMP N 9 Magelang in the School Year 2014/2015. A paper : Magelang, English Department, Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, Tidar University. Writing is one of the four language skills that students should master because the students can get much information about education, science, technology and culture. However, the average score of the writing skill of the seventh graders of SMP N 9 Magelang is 69, less than the average score of the learning target which is 75. It shows that the achievement of the students’ writing skill is unsatisfactory. The purposes of this research are to know whether the use of Environment as Teaching Media can improve the teaching learning motivation of descriptive text writing skill of the seventh graders of SMP N 9 Magelang in the school year 2014/2015, and also to know how high is the improvement of the descriptive text writing skill of the students who are taught using Environment as Teaching Media. The subject of this classroom action research is the seventh graders of SMP N 9 Magelang in the school year 2014/2015. There were 32 students. The writer used technique of non-test (observation and questionnaire) to know the improvement of teaching learning motivation of the descriptive text writing skill and the writer used technique of test to know the improvement of descriptive text writing skill. Based on the writer’s observation and questionnaire, it can be concluded that there is an improvement of the teaching learning motivation of descriptive text writing skill using environment as teaching media. In Cycle I, there was a bit change, the students were not ready to join the writing class using environment as teaching media. While in Cycle II, they have better attention and more active to attend the class and they seem interested in using Environment as Teaching Media which has better. Besides, there is an improvement of students’ writing skill in descriptive text. In Pre-Cycle, the students’ average score was 50.15. After they were taught using environment as teaching media in Cycle I, the students’ average score was 69.15. Then, in Cycle II, the average score was 80.62. Based on the data analysis, the writer concludes that using Environment as Teaching Media improves the teaching learning motivation descriptive text writing skill. Using Environment as Teaching Media also improves students’ writing skill in descriptive text. The writer suggests for the teacher to use the environment as teaching media in teaching leraning English lesson.
