THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE LUCKY DICE GAME IN TEACHING ENGLISH VOCABULARY TO THE FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SDN SALAMKANCI IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2016/2017
ABSTRACT
Elliana (2016): The Effectiveness of the Lucky Dice game in Teaching English
Vocabulary to the Fifth Grade Students of SDN Salamkanci 1 in the School year
2016/ 2017. A Paper: Magelang, English Department, Faculty of Education and
Teacher Training, Tidar University.
Vocabulary is one of the important aspects of language that supports
communication. However, the students vocabulary mastery of SD Negeri
Salamanci 1 Bandongan is low, it is about 5.57. There are many factors that
influence it. One of them is an inappropriate technique in teaching vocabulary. To
solve the problem, the researcher attempted to use lucky dice game in teaching
vocabulary to the fifth grade students of SD Negeri Salamkanci 1 Bandongan in
the school year 2016/2017
The purpose of this research is to prove that the use of lucky dice game in
teaching vocabulary is more effective than the use of the question and answer
drill. By reviewing related theories, the researcher proposes two hypotheses.
1. There is a significant difference of the students’ vocabulary mastery between
those who are taught using lucky dice and those who are taught using
question and answer drill.
2. The students whose teacher uses lucky dice game have better vocabulary
mastery than the students whose teacher uses question and answer drill.
The writer those the fifth grade students of SD Negeri Salamkanci 1
Bandongan as the population. There were 24 students. The researcher used the
simple random sampling technique and got group A as the experiment group and
group B as the control group. Both group consist of 12 students. They were
treated differently especially in the teaching technique.
The result of the statistical calculations shows that mean of the experimental
group (70.28) is higher than that of the control one (70.22). While the result of the
t-test is (2.3253). It is higher than the t-table (2.048) of the significant level of 5%.
Based on the result above, the researcher concludes that there is a significant
difference of the students’ vocabulary mastery between those who are taught
using lucky dice game and those who are taught using question and answer drill.
The reseacher suggests to English teachers to use lucky dice game as one of the
techniques in teaching vocabulary.
