USING QUESTION FORMULATION TECHNIQUE (QFT) TO IMPROVE THE RECOUNT TEXT WRITING SKILL OF THE TENTH GRADERS OF SMA MUHAMMADIYAH BOROBUDUR IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2014/2015

LENY NIRMALASARI (2015): “Using Question Formulation Technique (QFT) to Improve the Recount Text Writing Skill of the Tenth Graders of SMA Muhammadiyah Borobudur in the School Year 2014/2015”: A Paper: Magelang, English Department, Faculty of Education and Teachers Training, Tidar University. English is one of the global languages in this world. In senior high school, the purpose of teaching English is to make the students master the four language skills that consist of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. One skill that is difficult to learn is writing. Writing has some aspects, content, organization, vocabulary, language and mechanics. The fact is that the writing test result of the tenth graders of SMA Muhammadiyah Borobudur is not satisfactory yet. Through the data given by the English teacher, the standard learning target (KKM) score is 75. While the average score of the English test of X graders was only 65. In this research the writer applies Question Formulation Technique. The two objectives of this study are firstly, to know whether the use of Question Formulation technique can increase the learning motivation, secondly, to know how great the improvement of the recount text writing skill of the tenth graders of SMA Muhammadiyah Borobudur who are taught using Question Formulation technique is. This research is classified into a classroom action research (CAR). The subject of this research is the X D of SMA Muhammadiyah Borobudur in the school year 2014/2015. There are 21 students which consist of 12 girls and 9 boys. The research is divided into three phases; those are Pre-Cycle, Cycle I and Cycle II. Each cycle consists of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The writer uses observation, questionnaire, documentation, and test to collect the data. In analyzing the data, the writer uses qualitative and quantitative measurement. From the result of the research it can be seen that there is students’ motivation change after the writer taught using Question Formulation Technique. In Cycle I there is an increase of the students’ motivation, but some students’ do not show their participation during the learning process. While in Cycle II, they have better attention and more active to attend the lesson. This technique can also improve the students’ writing skill. In Pre-cycle test, the mean of the class scores is 64.38 (fair). In Cycle I test the mean of the class scores is 71.85 (good), the improvement from the Pre-Cycle test is 7.47. In Cycle II test the mean of the class scores is 80.23 (good), the improvement from Cycle I test is 8.38. Based on the result above, the writer concludes that the use of Question Formulation Technique can improve students’ writing skill and motivate them in teaching learning process. This technique is recommended to be used as one of the techniques in the teaching learning process, especially in writing.
