USING DYADIC ESSAY TECHNIQUE TO IMPROVE THE NARRATIVE TEXT REDAING SKILL OF THE TENTH GRADERS OF SMA MUHAMMADIYAH 1 MAGELANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2014/2015
ABSTRACT:
Language is a very important means of communication. English is used by students in all levels of education to communicate with other students and even with their English teachers. Since English is needed in global competition, students have to learn it to follow the development of science and technology. Reading is one of the language skills that should be mastered by students in learning English. However, the tenth graders of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Magelang still get difficulties in reading. It can be seen from the student’s average score of reading test which is 65.05, less than the standard score of the learning target, which is 75. There are many factors that influence it. One of them is the monotonous teaching technique that is used by the teacher. There are two main objectives of the research. Firstly, it is to know whether Dyadic Essay Technique can increase the learning motivation in the narrative text reading of the tenth graders of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Magelang in the school year 2014/2015. Secondly, it is to know how great the improvement of the narrative text reading skill of students who are taught by using Dyadic Essay Technique is. The writer conducted a classroom action research which was divided into three phases: Pre-Cycle, Cycle I, and Cycle II. The writer took X IPA-2 as the subject of this research which consists of 26 students. The writer collected the data using test and non-test techniques. The students of X IPA-2 SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Magelang made an improvement in their scores after being taught using Dyadic Essay Technique. In the Pre-Cycle test, the average score of the class is 66.23. In Cycle I, the average score of the class is 74.53. The improvement from Pre-Cycle test is 8.3 points. In Cycle II test, the average score of the class is 87.92, the improvement from Cycle I to Cycle II is 13.39 points. It can be concluded that using Dyadic Essay Technique in teaching reading has made an improvement score of 21.69. Based on the above result, the writer concludes that the use of Dyadic Essay technique can improve the learning motivation of the reading class and there is a great improvement of the narrative reading skill. The writer suggests English teacher to use Dyadic Essay Technique as an alternative technique in teaching reading. Keyword: Dyadic Essay Technique, Reading skill, Classroom Action Research.
