USING THINK-TALK-WRITE TECHNIQUE TO IMPROVE THE DESCRIPTIVE TEXT WRITING SKILL OF THE ELEVENTH GRADERS OF MAN 1 MAGELANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2014/2015
ABSTRACT:
The results of the descriptive text writing skill of the eleventh graders of MAN 1 Magelang in the school year 2014/2015 is not satisfying. The students’ average score is 60, although some students had reached the minimum achievement criteria of 75. The main problem is that students have low motivation and are not interested in doing the writing task. The two objectives of this study are firstly, it is two know whether the use of Think-Talk-Write technique can increase the learning motivation of the descriptive text of the students and secondly, it is to know how great the increase of the writing skill of descriptive text. The research is a Classroom Action Research. The subject of this research is the eleventh graders of MAN 1 Magelang in the school year 2014/2015 involving 20 female students and 16 male students. The writer used observation, questionnaire and documentation as the non-test instruments and a test to collect the data. Then the data were analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative data. Data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing and verification were used to analyze the qualitative data. The eleventh graders of MAN 1 Magelang made some improvements of 25.78 points in their descriptive text writing skill after they were taught using Think-Talk-Write technique. All of the students’ marks are higher than 75, meaning that the research questions and the performance indicators have been successfully answered. The Pre-Cycle’s average scores60.58, while the average score in Cycle I increased to 76.22. Finally, the average score in Cycle II increased becoming 86.36. The students’ behavior taken from the observation and questionnaire also improved as well. The students became more motivated in improving their descriptive text writing skill. Based on the above results, it can be summarized that the use of Think-Talk-Write technique which has been implemented through the Classroom Action Research is able to increase learning motivation and to improve the descriptive text writing skill of the eleventh graders in the school year 2014/2015. To suggest, both teachers and students can later on use the technique as an alternative strategy in the teaching and learning of writing.
