SKRIPSI THE IMPACT OF AI-ASSISTED FEEDBACK IN IMPROVING STUDENTS' NARRATIVE WRITING SKILL AT MAN KOTA MAGELANG

Writing skill is one of the key English language competencies that students need to master. However, students still face various challenges when writing narrative texts, such as a lack of understanding of writing components, limited opportunities for writing practice, a lack of interest in writing, anxiety about writing, and a lack of feedback from the teacher. Therefore, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to provide feedback is one alternative to support writing instruction. This study aims to determine whether there is a significant difference in narrative writing skill between students taught using an AI-assisted feedback strategy and those taught using a teacher-written corrective feedback strategy. In addition, this study also aims to examine the impact of AI-assisted feedback in improving the narrative writing skill of tenth-grade students at MAN Kota Magelang. This study employed a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design. The study used purposive sampling, the sample consisted of two classes: an experimental class with 29 students and a control class with 33 students. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test writing tests, which were assessed using the analytical rubric adapted by Brown and Abeywickrama (2019). The data were analyzed using normality tests, homogeneity tests, the Mann-Whitney test, and the N-Gain test with the assistance of SPSS version 27. The results of the study indicated that there was a significant difference between the writing skill of students in the experimental and the control classes. The results of the Mann-Whitney test showed a significance value less than 0.001 Furthermore, the N-Gain test results showed that the experimental class achieved an average score of 0.509, classified as moderate. These results indicated that the use of AI-assisted feedback produced greater improvement compared to teacher-written corrective feedback. The results of this study indicated that AI-assisted feedback has a positive impact in improving the narrative skill of tenth-grade students at MAN Kota Magelang. This strategy helped students to improve the quality of their writing.
