THESIS THE INFLUENCE OF READING ATTITUDE AND CROSS-CULTURAL AWARENESS ON READING COMPREHENSION AMONG EIGHTH GRADERS AT SMP NEGERI 1 BOROBUDUR
This study examines the predictive relationship between reading attitude,
cross-cultural awareness, and reading comprehension proficiency among eighth
grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Borobudur. The investigation was initiated in
response to suboptimal literacy outcomes, evidenced by preliminary findings
showing that a mere 2.33% of the student population met the established Learning
Objective Achievement Criteria (KKTP). This research seeks to determine whether
psychological leanings and sociocultural insights serve as critical determinants in
decoding and comprehending English texts.
Adopting a quantitative correlational design, the research utilized multiple
regression analysis to evaluate the data. A sample of 64 students was identified
through a purposive sampling technique. Data collection instruments included a
reading attitude scale, a cross-cultural awareness inventory, and a comprehensive
reading assessment.
Inferential statistical results demonstrated that reading attitude exerts a
significant positive influence on comprehension performance (t = 3.002, p < 0.05).
Moreover, cross cultural awareness was identified as a potent predictor, exhibiting
a robust correlation (r = 0.833; t = 6.977) with students' interpretive capacities. The
regression model indicated that these two variables combined account for 73.3% of
the total variance in reading comprehension, leaving 26.7% to be explained by
external factors. These results underscore the necessity for educators to integrate
affective and cultural dimensions into EFL pedagogy to optimize students' reading
mastery.
